Om Meditation
Scientific mystery of Om meditation is yet to be unfold. However, over the past sixty years, mantra meditation programs have become increasingly important. In medical and psychological community "OM" or "AUM" mantra meditation is a means of helping people, whether they be clinically sick or healthy. Scientifically demonstrated benefits of mantra meditation practice include an increase in the body's ability to heal and a shift from a tendency to use the right prefrontal cortex to a tendency to use the left prefrontal cortex, associated with a trend away from depression and anxiety and towards happiness, relaxation, and emotional balance.

Om is the supreme God. Om is the creator. Om is the Lover. Om is the protector. Om is the highest Goal. Om is the supreme awareness. Meditate on OM. OM is the ultimate. There is nothing beyond that.
Philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti defined meditation as:
Meditation is a state of mind which looks at everything with complete attention, totally, not just parts of it. And no one can teach you how to be attentive. If any system teaches you how to be attentive, then you are attentive to the system and that is not attention. Meditation is one of the greatest arts in life - perhaps the greatest, and one cannot possibly learn it from anybody, that is the beauty of it. It has no technique and therefore no authority. When you learn about yourself, watch yourself, watch the way you walk, how you eat, what you say, the gossip, the hate, the jealousy - if you are aware of all that in yourself, without any choice, that is part of meditation.
The key to Christian meditation is focusing attention to the God's Word. The power comes from the God's word.
The Psalm 19:14 states, "Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in Thy sight...", which means, let my words and thoughts be in sync.
Sri Ramana Maharshi said:
The single sound [Om] shines for ever in the heart as the Self. Earnest seekers who, incessantly and with a steady mind, repeat ‘Om’ will attain success. By repetition of the pure ‘Om’ the mind is withdrawn from sense objects and becomes one with the Self.
Sri Shankara said:
Meditation is 'neither-inner-nor-outer' it is is nothing other than the consciousness, the abodeless abode of the consciousness only.
Om meditation is having five common steps:
1. An open attitude. Having an open attitude during meditation means letting distractions come and go naturally without judging them. In Om Meditation , when the attention goes to distracting or wandering thoughts, they are not suppressed; instead, the meditator gently brings attention back to the Om. In some types of meditation, the meditator learns to "observe" thoughts and emotions while meditating.
2. A quiet location. Om Meditation is usually practiced in a quiet place with as few distractions as possible. This can be particularly helpful for beginners.
3. A specific, comfortable posture. Depending on the type being practiced, meditation can be done while sitting, lying down, standing, walking, or in other positions.
4. A focus of awareness. Focusing one's attention is usually a part of meditation. For example, the meditator may focus on the mantra OM( or a specially chosen word or set of words with Om mantra), Om Symbol, an object, or the sensations of the breath. Some times meditation involve paying attention to whatever is the dominant content of consciousness.
5. “O Bhairavi, by perfect recitation of pranava or the sacred syllable Om, and by contemplating over the void at the end of the extended phase of it, and by the most eminent energy of the emptiness, the yogi attains the supreme state of emptiness.” [Om meditation in Vijnana Bhairava Tantra, 39]
There are several Benefits of Om Meditations. However, the most important is the spiritual awakening. Of course, stress relaxation and healing, increasing confidence, fearlessness, open attitude are the other benefits.
